Well, it seems the UCSB Middle East Ensemble has been invited to play en Egypt by the Egyptian ambassador! The ensemble played for him a couple years ago during a visit to UCSB, and apparently he was so thoroughly impressed that he officially invited us to play over there! CAIRO OPERA HOUSE!
Needless to say, I am totally beyond stoked at this opportunity. Apparently, we’re being lined up for 4 (four!) shows at this awesome venue. Two nights will be one set, and the remaining two will consist of a separate set of music. We’ve been practicing and busting the Egyptian classics for over a year now, including 20+ minute long pieces sung by Umm Kulthum, like Inta Umri. More info to come as I hear it. The trip is not 100% yet (I’d put us at about 90%), but I’m pretty sure it’s gonna go down.
And since I’m out there, I’m going to use Egypt as the launch point for a (hopefully) six months long backpacking adventure through as much of Europe as I can. Main points of interest being: everywhere. Hehe
Well, Turkey for sure, Scandinavia, Central Europe, South & Mediterranean Europe, even North Africa if I can squeeze it in. I plan on WOOFing a lot to stretch out the stay as much as possible, as well as a good deal of couch surfing to keep down costs while keeping it real. I actually hosted ~60 couchsurfers this summer, the vast majority from Europe. With any luck, some of them will be willing to return the favor and host me and Laurel for a night, or two, or a week, haha. Damn I’m stoked.
I just realized that I’ve been sending “notes 2 myself” via Gmail’s filter function since the beginning of 2006. The idea was, instead of writing something down on a piece of paper to be lost or filed away in one of my several near random places, I would e-mail myself the note and it would join the mass of other correspondences, spam, near spam, uncooked spam, forwarded spam, spam musubi, and volunteered spam (aka mailing lists). BUT, all would not be lost, because Gmail’s filter would auto tag them as a note from me to me, making them easy to find and just as searchable as all the other mostly stuff in my little e-mail universe.
First note to self? Here it is.
1. Subject: cool lit site?
Sent: Jan 18, 2006

Is it a cool lit site? Looks like it, sure, probably.. Maybe? Was it a place I even ever visited again? No. This is how, if anyone else acts like me, we consumers of information go about scouring the net to please our information buds. I apparently, just want little, tasty bits of information. But stringing together larger systems or works of information? Meh, not so much, apparently.
So, 4 years and nearly 592 notes-to-self later, I thought I would begin to engage in the reflexive process of looking over all these damned notes and seeing if any of it was worth noting in the first place. And if so, if it might still be relevant or worth my attention years later. At the very least I’ll be able to sum them up here in little note-to-self “digests” as I digest and..regurgitate?..them. Teehee. Okay.
The rest of this post here will summarize and list the remaining 7 notes to self sent in 2006. Since I can’t completely recall that far back what I was doing, I half think that I may have created the note-to-self filter in 2007 and backward applied it to any email originating from my email address to my email address. Not sure.
2. Subject: mark twain quote
Sent: May 2, 2006
Message: “In religion and politics, people’s beliefs and convictions are in almost every case gotten at second hand, and without examination.” –Mark Twain
Comments: I’ve definitely been busted on this one, quite recently in fact, on yahoo! answers. lordie.
3. Subject: essay
Sent: May 19, 2006
Message: In your essay, you should trace the parallels, connections, but also differences, between worship and devotion on the various levels we have looked atover the past three weeks.
Comments: this class I remember.. It compared the oral Vedas of the Hindu religious tradition to the written Torah of the Jewish tradition.
4. Subject: billboard article (short) 2005
Sent: June 5, 2006
Message (excerpt): While overall music sales declined in 2005, all things en espanol continued to rise. Led by the success of Shakira and Daddy Yankee, Latin music was the only genre to register growth from 2004 into 2005, with figures from Nielsen SoundScan and the Recording Industry Assn. of America reflecting substantial sales jumps.
Comments: can’t remember what paper this was being researched for.. music in latin america? something.
5. duplicate of #4 (but included citation information)
6. Subject:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football#Use_of_the_word_.22football.22_in_English-speaking_countries
Sent: June 22, 2006
Message: (excerpt from wiki article linked): The word “football“, when used in reference to a specific game can mean any one of those described above. Because of this, much friendly controversy has occurred over the term football, primarily because it is used in different ways in different parts of the English-speaking world. Most often, the word “football” is used to refer to the code of football that is considered dominant within a particular region. So, effectively, what the word “football” means usually depends on where one says it.
Comments: kind of a weak note to self.
7. Subject: ACADEMIC DISQUALIFICATION
Sent: June 23, 2006
Message: http://www.advising.ltsc.ucsb.edu/aeqa/
Comments: oh snap. I think I was on a quarter-long “academic probation” which could have led to academic disqualification. All I know is at some point along the line a year later I ended up with a degree (which I have yet to request to be mailed, since the first mailing was to an old address and returned). Word.
8. Subject: You have an Action Cat postcard!

Subject: link to a postcard which is no longer valid ![]()
Comments: I found this on the site which linked to the now invalid postcard. Long live animated GIFs.

Well, that wraps it up for the 2006 notes to self. I can now close that little open drawer of random thoughts and goings on of my life in 2006. Oh wait, I still probably have to track down the random bits of paper and receipts that I put here and there. Track them down, burn them, and bury the ashes. Okay, late!
Welp, what to say? So many ideas, yet how to pursue any of them? Kind of Bloop’s done, a success.. I should be wrapping up a jazzy chiptune for a Ubiktune chip compilation coming up, I’m half a year late for my new chip disk release, while also thinking about pursuing a new cumbia band and supposedly working on a ska real book full of old standard ska transcriptions. BUT I volunteered to work 8-5 M-F for a month or two which turns out will be going for even more time, until 2010 it’s looking. Lordie. Anyways, might as well post _something_ eh? Just got back from a visit to Toluca for a wedding and ~a week in Acapulco. Great times. Dubstep hasn’t reached Acapulco yet, apparently, so I had the idea of remixing some good Mexican choons a la dubstep. Pipe dreams, but dreams nonetheless. The majority of the entertainment comes from the dream itself–will I ever actually make dubstep Mexican remixes is a whole nother issue altogether
.. Oh yeah, grad school? Who knows about that too. Who what when where why how when how who when how how who when why how where how. I’ll find a way to put some Acapulco pictures up here though.

http://www.kindofbloop.com: what a great release. i’m so stoked it has been so well received.. twitterstorm of comments and what not about kind of bloop, mad blog coverage from the get go, articles on time.com and popsci.com and lots of other places.. well, the time article is weak but man, what coverage! i’m so blown away by the tracks everyone did, and by how well they fit together as a whole work. and people are loving it. mad thanks and props to andy baio for putting it all together, and to all the kickstarter backers, and to the other artists, sam, jake, rich and sergio.. pure awesomeness.
welp my kind buddies from boombox orchestra jason j. and andy k. were kind enough to let me record some of jason’s drumming skills for my chopping pleasure! so, i set out to make a smooth jazz hit out of it and here’s what i ended up with!@#$
shimona!
whirred. My buddies Pete, Pete and I were jamming out this beautiful Saturday afternoon and, while playing a 10/8 Turkish curcuna rhythm (it’s a composite rhythm, composed of a group of three 8th notes, followed by two groups of two and another group of three: 3+2+2+3), I busted ‘Tú sólo tú.’
I first heard this rhythm played with chords and a simple bass line when I heard one of John Bilezikjian’s renditions of the Armenian tune, ‘Seghan ne arad.’ Ever since learning that, I’ve experimented playing different chord changes in curcuna, it reminds me of a funky waltz or polka.
So after we jammed it out, we decided to try to make a quick recording of it so this unique fusion wouldn’t be forgotten.
It’s a little rough around the edges, so maybe one day we’ll polish it up and re-record one foreals. Peace!

check it here: beek-pleiadeans.mp3whazup yall. this chip came out march 3, 2009 and is my first release through ske ’satanic kids enterprise’ .. their webpage is http://www.swapper.se .. there’s a dope coop between malmen & xaimus up there, and some nice chippies from ko0x, mano and joule.. word up. should be releasing another little ditty sometime soon here.
beek out
you like that! how about a 3 year gap between blog posts! so since i’ve started this blog a couple weeks ago, i’ve decided to cheat and import content from my first blog ever, “dikotomi” (which is still online until i take it off blogger.com) from between 3 and 4 years ago, and another private blog i was using as a personal journal.. there weren’t many posts on either anyways, but i thought it would help aid my sense of personal historical continuity (or discontinuity i suppose).. i’m still figuring out what to do with tags and categories and trying to get a feel for what the hell to put on here and what not to.. i’m leaning more toward putting more on here because i can direct friends and family toward this place if they are interested in my goings on and thoughts about random stuff.
where things get mixed up and weird is that i’m also planning on using this site as a place to keep fans updated with info about my musical endeavors, projects, ideas, releases, etc etc etc. so anyway hopefully when it’s all figured out stuff will be well categorized and tagged so that fans can sort through all the stuff they may not be too interested in, in search of the good stuff (like new chiptunes, beats, songs, pieces, conciertos, corn flakes, boomzies mimzies and floomzies, flotsam jetsam and general brigandry)

this dude traded in his beloved red stapler for a red chair cushion, chair back rest and keyboard. winner? i think so!
oh yeah, and there’s poetry. yikes. just be warned, i never professed to be a good poet. i consider myself talented with the musical note, not so much with the written word. i once fancied myself a poet of sorts and i do think others have enjoyed an occasional line or two of my poetic verse, rhymed or otherwise. but mostly i just write it and that’s the end of it. anyways, i’m posting it! so like i said, be warned. feedback is always welcome, as well. and i don’t care about positive feedback, if you think it’s ass, tell me it’s ass. obviously it’s helpful to know what makes it assy, but if you’re too lazy to figure out why it reminds you of a certain human body part or nickname for an animal, still feel free to leave it at that and let me know. cheers out.

i take bites
and spit bits
at the emptiness-creator

as i play along
maintain a connection with the null and void
maintain a connection with the null and void:
slip love notes to nothingness in between.
detach the meanings from wordy thoughts
and blow them in a kiss toward the black hole
which lies at the center of every atom of every being.
sing songs to an audience of nobody,
be the sound of one finger snapping,
if at least for a nonexistant moment…
you’re drenched in reason and meanings,
be desiccated by the empty truth of nothingness.
So, I’ve never started a band before. I remember a couple years ago, thinking to myself how cool it would be to start some sort of salsaish or latin jazzish band. For whatever reasons or excuses, I never managed to get that started and, until about a month ago, actually forgot about the idea.
This time, it’s going down! Cumbia dub skatronica! Or something. Actually, scratch the ska probably. Cumbia for sure, and cumbia to the max. But as I’ve been listening to and enjoying cumbia for the past four years or so, I can’t get over trying to compare it to reggae, or thinking of it as “Latin America’s reggae” or something. (And no, reggaeton is not Latin America’s reggae; if anything I’d call reggaeton Latin America’s dancehall/rap/electronica fusion). sure, I’ve been playing in reggae bands for about five years and I may have a bias, but I feel this comparison is useful nonetheless.
